REFLEXOLOGY, in various forms, has been practised for up to 5,000 years. There is evidence of foot massage in ancient Egypt and it was used in conjunction with acupuncture by the Chinese. Native Americans are also believed to have used foot massage for health.
Reflexology was developed in the West at the turn of the last century and its popularity has increased dramatically over the past 40 years.

The Theory

Modern medicine accepts that a problem in one part of the body can be represented by pain in another, because the two parts share the same nerve supply. The nerves endings in the feet [7,200 in each] are believed to provide an energy channel through the body. Specific parts of the body can be contacted by pressure on the corresponding 'reflex point' on the feet. Reflexology aims to restore balance and harmony, to stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms and promote health naturally. Recipients find reflexology deeply relaxing which in itself is thought to prevent stress-related conditions and ease existing health problems.
People who have regular treatments often report an increased sense of well-being. Many people have reflexology simply as a pleasant way to relax and to prevent health problems building up. Regular relaxation through reflexology can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of well-being.

The Practice

A treatment lasts about 45 minutes. Before the first treatment, the reflexologist will discuss with you, in complete confidence, your medical history, lifestyle, diet etc. If you have, or are worried that you may have, any serious medical condition, you should consult your doctor before the first session. While you relax in a comfortable chair, the therapist will massage your feet and then begin the pressure massage. This is confined to the feet and ankles, although occasionally it may be necessary to work on the hands, for example if you have painful toe joints. Particular attention is paid to reflex points corresponding to problem areas in the body.
A variety of sensations can be produced in the reflex points, depending on the nature of the complaint. You will be asked to report any sensations you feel but otherwise to relax completely.

After Your Treatment

Most people feel a sense of deep relaxation, often followed by increased energy. Many report a particularly good night's sleep. Some conditions, especially acute ones, can improve after the first treatment. For more chronic problems, you may be advised to have weekly treatments until you begin to feel better, with fortnightly or monthly treatments thereafter. You may also be shown self-help techniques. Because accumulated toxins are released into the blood during a treatment, it is important to drink plenty of water and eat a light diet for 24 hours afterwards to help the liver and kidneys detoxify the system.

Does it tickle?
No. The pressure is firm but comfortable. Sometimes people who are new to Reflexology expect it to tickle, but you will quickly relax.

Does it hurt?

No. Reflexology should never be an unpleasant experience. Occasionally, you may feel a sensitive spot in your feet. The pressure will be reduced accordingly.

Do I need to have a health problem to benefit from Reflexology?

Absolutely not! It's a great way to relax and take time to consider your health generally.
